The police have arrested Bangladesh Krishak League’s acting president Sheikh Md Jahangir Alam from the capital’s Adabar area in connection with a case of attacking and assaulting people during the student-led July mass uprising in 2024 at Shyamoli.
On information, the police conducted a drive in Adabar area and arrested the Krishak League leader after 11:30pm on Sunday, said Adabar police station officer-in-charge Ziaur Rahman.
‘He was shown arrested as a suspect in a July uprising case,’ said Ziaur, adding that Jahangir was sent to court on Monday for further legal proceedings.
The July uprising ousted the authoritarian regime of the Awami League on August 5, 2024. The Krishak League is the farmers’ organisation of the AL.
Plaintiff Jobair Ahmed Rajib filed the case on October 27, 2024, alleging that leaders and activists of Awami League, activities of which are now banned, and its affiliated organisations attacked protesting people with sharp weapons and firearms at Shyamoli on August 5, 2024, leaving him seriously injured.
Earlier, on October 3, 2024, the police arrested Krishak League president Samir Chandra Chanda in a July uprising murder case.
Following the arrest of Samir, Jahangir has been serving as the acting president of the Krishak League, according to the police.
On May 12, 2025, the interim government slapped a ban on all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated, associate and like-minded organisations under the Anti-Terrorism Act until the completion of the International Crimes Tribunal’s trial of the party and its leadership over atrocities during the July mass uprising.
