Apple has held early-stage discussions with Intel and Samsung Electronics over potential chip manufacturing partnerships in the United States, according to a recent report by Bloomberg News.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the report said Apple is exploring options to diversify the production of its main processors, which currently rely heavily on overseas manufacturing. As part of these efforts, Apple executives are said to have visited a Samsung semiconductor facility under development in Texas, while also holding preliminary talks with Intel regarding its foundry services.

The discussions are described as exploratory, with no agreements or production orders finalised so far. Any potential shift would mark a notable change in Apple’s supply chain strategy, which has long depended on TSMC for advanced chip fabrication.

Apple’s latest iPhone models, including the iPhone 17 series, are built using variants of TSMC’s chip manufacturing technology, which is also widely used in the production of advanced AI chips.

The reported talks come as Apple continues to face supply constraints affecting its devices. The company previously indicated that shortages of advanced processor chips had impacted iPhone sales in a recent quarter.
