Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Minister Dipen Dewan today resigned from his post, citing physical complications.
In a resignation letter addressed to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Dipen said he had been facing various health-related complications that were creating difficulties in discharging his duties properly.
Prime Minister's Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman confirmed the matter by sharing a copy of the letter with the media.
In the letter, Dipen wrote that stepping down from the position was necessary to help maintain the pace of the government's development and administrative activities.
"Due to my physical illness, various problems are arising in performing the responsibilities entrusted to me," the letter said.
The minister stepped down from the post after three and a half months.
Dewan, a former senior joint district judge, resigned from government service in 2005 and joined BNP politics.
His father, Subimal Dewan, was an adviser to BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman. Subimal was also the founding general secretary of the Rangamati district BNP.
In 2010, Dewan was elected president of the Rangamati district BNP. In 2016, he was appointed BNP's central assistant religious affairs secretary, a post he still holds.
He contested an election for the first time on February 12, defeating UPDF-backed independent candidate Pahel Chakma by 169,066 votes.
After BNP won the election by a large margin and formed the government under Tarique Rahman's leadership on February 17, Dewan was given charge of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs.
