The Detective Branch of the police on Sunday said that they primarily believed that Azizur Rahman Musabbir, a leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s volunteer wing Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, was killed due to business-related disputes.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s DB chief, additional commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam, disclosed the information at a press briefing at the DMP media centre in the capital Dhaka.

Replying to a query, he said that it was primarily believed that the murder was carried out due to business-related disputes.

‘However, detectives are investigating the incident and the actual motive behind the murder will be known after the investigation. We are considering all possible angles to the incident,’ he said.

Sahfiqul also said that several DB teams conducted raids at different places in the capital, Manikganj, Mymensingh and Netrakona on Saturday and arrested four suspects in this connection.

The arrestees are identified as Jinnat, the alleged main shooter, Md Billal, the alleged main coordinator, Abdul Kadir, an alleged associate of the killers and Md Riaz, he said, adding that the operations were ongoing to arrest another suspected shooter named Rahim.

The arrestees were identified by analysing CCTV footage from the scene and reviewing information provided by witnesses, he said.

‘During the preliminary interrogation, the arrestees confessed to their involvement in the murder. We will interrogate them in the remand to find out more information,’ Shafiqul said.

Replying to a query, he said that initially, no political connection of the arrestees was found.

On January 7, Musabbir and Abu Sufian, general secretary of Karwan Bazar Van Association, were shot at about 8:15pm in front of the Ahsanullah Institute of Technical and Vocational Education and Training Centre in the Tejturibazar area.

The police and eyewitnesses said that Musabbir and Sufian were walking towards the main road through the alley when two miscreants, who were waiting in a small dark lane in front of the AITVET Centre, opened fire on them before fleeing the scene.

Both Musabbir and Sufian then ran back into the alley and collapsed after going a short distance.

They were taken to BRB Hospital at Panthapath, where Musabbir was declared dead.

Sufian is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

On January 8, Musabbir’s wife Suraiya Begum filed a case with the Tejgaon police station against four or five unidentified people in this connection.
