At least 14 people, comprising students and police members, were injured on Sunday in a clash between two groups of students of Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology over the recent appointment of new vice-chancellor.

Among the injured, eight were students and six were police personnel of Gazipur metropolitan sadar thana, said Md Aminul Islam, the director of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur.

He also said that, among the injured, five students were admitted to the male surgery ward of the hospital.

Gazipur metropolitan sadar thana officer in charge Md Aminul Islam said the situation of the DUET campus was normal at around 5:30pm.

Earlier, on May 14, the government appointed Professor Mohammad Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology as the new vice-chancellor of the DUET.

After the news spread the same night, a section of students started a movement boycotting the decision and demanded the appointment of a vice-chancellor from DUET.

Following the movement since Sunday morning, the protesting students took position on the campus and locked the main gate, hearing that the new vice-chancellor would join the office.

Later another section of students locked into an altercation with the protesting students, and a clash erupted.

Two groups of students hurled bricks and stones while some got injured.

Later the new vice-chancellor joined the office.

Gazipur metropolitan sadar thana officer in charge Aminul Islam said that they took position outside the campus and during the clash some bricks hurt six members.

Meanwhile, in a Facebook post on Sunday, Chhatra Dal central general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir said that the change of vice-chancellors of universities has become a cause of concern for the Chhatra Shibir.

He also accused Chhatra Shibir of the violent attacks on students in DUET.
