The Border Guard Bangladesh on Thursday said that it had foiled 10 separate push-in attempts by the India’s Border Security Force along the border with the neighbouring country over the past 24 hours.
With the foiling of the latest attempt early on Thursday, the number of push-in attempts thwarted by the BGB rose to 11 in nearly 30 hours.
The BGB strengthened intelligence surveillance and patrol activities along the border to prevent possible push-in attempts, according to a press release issued by the force on Thursday.
BGB officials said that the Bangladesh’s border force resisted 10 BSF push-in attempts in the 24 hours leading up to midnight on Wednesday.
Early on Thursday, members of the BGB foiled another attempt by the Indian BSF to push 28 people into Bangladesh unlawfully along the Chapainawabganj border, New Age’s staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported.
BGB-16 Battalion commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Ariful Islam Masum told New Age that, acting on a tip-off that BSF members were trying to push a group of people into Bangladesh, a BGB patrol rushed to the spot and found them inside Indian territory near the zero line.
He said that the group remained at the location as of Thursday morning, while BSF personnel had increased their presence at nearby border posts.
India has continued making fresh attempts to push people into Bangladesh unlawfully since the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s landslide victory in the West Bengal state election in early May.
The BGB foiled an attempt by four to five individuals to enter Bangladesh illegally through the Jadabpur border area under the jurisdiction of the BGB-58 Battalion at Maheshpur in Jhenaidah, the release said, adding that the BGB’s strong stance forced them to return to Indian territory, said the BGB Headquarters press release.
In another incident in the Samonta Border Outpost area under the Maheshpur Battalion in Jhenaidah district, the BSF opened a border gate in an attempt to push 30 to 35 people into Bangladesh. The BGB foiled the attempt and prevented the entry of the individuals, who were allegedly being transported along the border in a prison van.
The BGB-21 Battalion in Khulna also resisted a push-in attempt at the Goga and Rudrapur border areas in Jashore district, after which the BSF removed the individuals from the border.
The BGB-20 Battalion in Joypurhat received intelligence reports that the BSF had gathered 10 individuals opposite the Koya and Basudevpur borders in the district, but the BSF’s attempt failed due to heightened intelligence and precautionary measures by the BGB.
At least 2,463 people were reportedly pushed into Bangladesh by Indian authorities, mostly the BSF, between May 7, 2025, and May 8, 2026.
Of them, at least 223 were Rohingyas, including 50 registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in India.
Meanwhile, the 57th four-day director general-level talks between the BGB and the BSF are scheduled to be held in New Delhi of India from June 8 to 11, where push-ins will be one of the top agenda items.
On the other hand, the BGB was informed through intelligence and other sources that four Muslims, who were reportedly excluded from India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) list, were being held at three holding centres near BSF camps opposite the Chapainawabganj border under the jurisdiction of the BGB-53 Battalion in Chapainawabganj.
Opposite the Haripur border under the jurisdiction of BGB-50 Battalion in Thakurgaon, a patrol team from the BSF’s Kakarmoni camp detained two Bangladeshi nationals.
At the Rowshanpur border in Panchagarh district under BGB-18 Battalion, the BSF reportedly pushed one individual into Bangladesh. Local people detained the person and informed the BGB, after which the BGB took necessary measures that resulted in the individual being sent back to India.
In another incident at the Sonamasjid border under BGB-59 Battalion at Maheshpur, a BGB release said that the paramilitary force received information that Indian police had handed over 22 detainees to the BSF for push-in into Bangladesh, and that the BGB remained vigilant in the area.
Local people detained two suspicious individuals in the Utmachhara border area under the BGB-48 Battalion in Sylhet and handed them over to the BGB.
The BGB is now on the highest alert at the Kachugara border under BGB-31 Battalion in Netrakona after receiving information that 15–20 people were taken to Balishi Gitaram Government Primary School under Mahadev police station in Assam state of India.
The BGB said that there was no barbed-wire fencing along the border with India.
The BGB said that it would not allow any individual or group to enter Bangladesh illegally and would strongly resist all push-in attempts that do not follow international border management practices, existing laws, and bilateral agreements.
According to Bangladesh authorities, Bangladesh shares a 4,156-kilometre-long border with India, of which about 180 kilometres run through different water bodies and 79 kilometres through the Sundarban.
