Police have arrested a local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader on allegations of assaulting two police officers during an altercation in Madan municipality of Netrokona yesterday evening.
The incident took place at the intersection near Madan Government Haji Abdul Aziz Khan Degree College. The detainee, Mithu Mia, 22, is president of the JCD unit at the degree college, said police.
"We went to the spot after receiving information about a dispute involving passengers at the bus counter. There, a young man named Mithu assaulted and injured two police officers. He has been detained," Madan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Tarikul Islam said speaking to The Daily Star this afternoon.
A case had already been filed against the accused on charges of obstructing official duties and attacking police personnel, the OC said, adding that the process of producing him before a Netrokona court was underway.
The injured officers, constables Md Faridul Islam and Ataur Rahman of Madan Police Station, received treatment at the Upazila Health Complex.
According to police and local sources, frustration among passengers mounted near the college intersection after buses failed to arrive on schedule.
Following complaints from passengers, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nadir Hossain Shamim and OC Mohammad Tarikul Islam, accompanied by law enforcers, went to the scene to bring the situation under control.
Passengers informed the administration about prolonged waiting, a shortage of transport services and other inconveniences. Police alleged that while authorities were attempting to calm the situation, Mithu arrived at the scene and sought to escalate tensions. An argument reportedly broke out after police officers, acting on the OC's instructions, asked him to leave the area.
At one stage, Mithu allegedly became aggressive and assaulted two police officers, leaving constables Faridul and Ataur injured. Police subsequently detained him and took him to the police station.
SH Pipul, president of Madan Upazila Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, said, "I have heard about Mithu's detention. After verifying the facts of the incident and finding evidence that he violated party discipline, I have learned that he has already been expelled from the organisation."
