OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI founder Elon Musk have backed Anthropic chief Dario Amodei’s call to slow the pace of artificial intelligence development, amid growing concerns about the risks posed by increasingly capable AI systems.
Altman, in a post on X, said he agreed with Amodei that the development of frontier AI models needed to be paced more carefully.
“I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we’ve had at OpenAI in recent weeks,” Altman wrote.
“Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We’ll have more to share soon.”
Musk, who heads xAI and Tesla, also endorsed Amodei’s position in a brief post on X, writing: “Dario is right.”
Musk later reshared an earlier post in which he had warned about the risks of rapid AI development, saying the technology posed a risk “significantly higher than nuclear weapons”.
“I’ve been sounding the alarm on AI for a long time,” Musk wrote.
‘We Must Slow the Pace’
In a post on his personal website, Amodei warned about the rapid development of AI and its potential impact on society, while acknowledging the technology’s benefits across various sectors.
He said AI also carried “serious risks”, including the possibility of losing control of AI systems, their misuse for cyberattacks and bioterrorism, and major economic disruption.
Amodei described building AI “too fast” as “reckless”, but said halting development altogether could deprive humanity of its benefits or leave the technology in the hands of authoritarian governments.
“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models. Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain,” he wrote.
Amodei’s comments came days after AI researcher Jacob Coxon, who had left OpenAI to join Anthropic, announced his departure from the industry.
Coxon accused both companies of “gambling with our lives” in their race to develop AI models capable of self-improvement.
