The government on Thursday issued a gazette notification confirming a cabinet resolution congratulating foreign minister Khalilur Rahman on his election as president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The notification, released by the Cabinet Division signed by cabinet secretary Nasimul Ghani, formally recognised the outcome of the vote held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on June 2.
In the election, Khalilur Rahman secured the presidency for a one-year term, receiving 190 votes and defeating the special envoy of Cyprus’ foreign minister Andreas S Kakouris by a margin of eight votes. The 81st session of the UNGA is scheduled to open on September 8.
The Cabinet, in its meeting on June 4, adopted a resolution conveying congratulations and describing the outcome as a significant diplomatic achievement for Bangladesh.
According to the gazette, the government credited the result to the leadership and strategic direction of prime minister Tarique Rahman, alongside coordinated diplomatic efforts by the foreign ministry and Bangladesh’s permanent mission to the United Nations.
The resolution said that the election reflected growing international confidence in Bangladesh’s diplomatic engagement and its role within the multilateral system.
It said that the development would further enhance the country’s global standing.
