Bangladesh tightened their grip on a Women’s T20 World Cup berth with a convincing 30-run victory over Papua New Guinea in their fifth group-stage match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Dubai on Tuesday.

The win extended Bangladesh’s impressive run in the tournament and further solidified Nigar Sultana Joty’s side’s standing near the top of the points table, leaving them well placed to book a spot in the World Cup proper.

After winning the toss, Bangladesh opted to bat and made full use of favourable conditions. Openers Dilara Akter and Sharmin Akhter provided a positive start, setting the tone with a composed opening stand. Dilara struck a fluent 35 while Sharmin contributed 28, ensuring the innings remained on track through the powerplay.

The momentum was maintained in the middle overs by Sobhana Mostary, who anchored the innings with a brisk, unbeaten 34 from 24 deliveries. However, it was the late surge from Shorna Akter that truly lifted Bangladesh to an imposing total. Coming in at the death, Shorna unleashed a blistering assault, hammering 37 off just 14 balls, including four massive sixes, to propel Bangladesh to 168 for 5.

In reply, Papua New Guinea showed early intent but found it increasingly difficult to match the rising asking rate against Bangladesh’s tight bowling and energetic fielding. Wickets fell steadily, disrupting any hopes of a sustained chase. Captain Bauwi Tau fought back with a top score of 35, but lacked support from the other end.

Bangladesh’s bowlers shared the spoils, with Fahima Khatun conceding just 13 runs for her wicket, while Rabeya Khatun and Ritu Moni also struck at key moments.

Sharp fielding, highlighted by crucial run-outs, further tilted the balance firmly in Bangladesh’s favour.

Needing an unlikely 35 runs from the final over, Papua New Guinea eventually finished on 138 for 9, confirming a comprehensive 30-run win and bringing Bangladesh another step closer to the World Cup stage.
