Three hikers were rescued from California’s Mount Shasta after using Google Gemini to help plan an expedition for which authorities said they were inadequately prepared.

The men, described as relatively inexperienced hikers, used the AI service to help choose their route and decide what equipment and supplies to take. They had expected the climb to take about eight hours but spent roughly 16 hours reaching the summit, according to local reporting.

The group reached the summit at about 7 pm, hours after the recommended turnaround time, and attempted to descend in darkness. They became lost, and one member of the group injured his knee. They spent the night on the mountain before US Forest Service personnel and volunteers helped rescue them.

TechCrunch reported, citing the sheriff's office, that the group brought too little food and water for the conditions, and warned visitors not to rely solely on artificial intelligence when planning mountain trips.
