The funeral of Customs officer Bullet Bairagi was held at his ancestral home in Tungipara last night.

Preparations for the final rites began soon after his body reached his residence.

The body was brought from Cumilla around 5:00pm, after which religious rituals were performed in the presence of family members.

Later, after tributes from relatives and colleagues, Bullet Bairagi’s body was cremated at 10:40pm.

Bullet Bairagi was the son of Shushil Bairagi of Babupur village under Dumuria union in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj.

As the body reached the Bairagi residence beside the Tungipara-Tarail road, the area went into mourning, with cries of family members, relatives, and neighbours filling the atmosphere.

The deceased’s uncle Debashish Bairagi told The Daily Star that the entire house remained in mourning since morning and all funeral rites were completed according to religious traditions.

He said relatives and colleagues from Dhaka and other places gathered at the village, while officials from Chattogram training centre and various Customs units also attended to pay last respects.

The family demanded a fair investigation and maximum punishment for those responsible for the killing.

According to family sources, Bullet left Chattogram for Cumilla on Friday night after completing training. He last spoke to his family around 2:30am. Later, his phone was contacted from unknown numbers and then switched off.

On Saturday morning, the body of Bullet, 35, of Gopalganj’s Tungipara, was recovered beside the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in the Kotbari Bishwa Road area in Cumilla Sadar South upazila. He served as an assistant revenue officer at the Customs, Excise, and VAT Commissionerate in Cumilla’s Bibir Bazar Land Port.
