India has decided to proceed with all formal requirements for its T20 World Cup match against Pakistan, despite Islamabad's announcement that it would boycott the fixture.
The Indian team will travel to Sri Lanka, hold training sessions, attend the pre-match press conference and be present at the stadium on match day as scheduled, in line with ICC protocol.
Following Pakistan’s government-backed decision to boycott the match against India, the cricketing world has been gripped by uncertainty.
The ICC has urged Pakistan to reconsider, pointing to the potential consequences of a no-show.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not issued an official statement, according to a bdnews24.com report.
A board official, however, told news agency ANI that India would move forward strictly within the rules.
"Team India will travel to Sri Lanka and follow ICC protocol. They will practice as per schedule, do a press conference and reach the stadium according to time and wait for the match referee to call off the match."
According to ICC playing conditions, a walkover is awarded only if a team captain fails to appear at the toss.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav is expected to be present for the toss.
If Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha does not turn up, India could then be formally declared the winner.
The match is scheduled for Feb 15 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series for several years, meeting only in ICC and Asian Cricket Council tournaments.
Despite Pakistan’s poor record against India on the world stage, including eight defeats in eight ODI World Cup meetings and just one win in eight T20 World Cup matches, the fixture continues to draw the highest global interest.
The match also generates more broadcast revenue than any other fixture. A cancellation would therefore deal a major blow to ICC earnings, while Pakistan’s board is almost certain to face a heavy fine.
