Offices will reopen today as the four-day public holiday for the 13th national elections and the referendum ends with the nation being set for the newly elected government to take over.
Educational institutions across the country will reopen from tomorrow due to added holidays besides the one for the national polls.
Many people started coming back to Dhaka on Saturday from all over the country as the election holiday ends.
Earlier, the interim government first declared Election Day of February 12 a public holiday, while later they added February 11 to the election holiday.
As the weekend of Friday and Saturday fell on February 13 and 14, it became a four-day holiday, causing a massive number of people with families to rush home from February 10.
On Saturday many people made their return journey as the offices are scheduled to reopen today.
Md Mubarak Hossain, joint director (marine safety and traffic management department) for the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority at Dhaka River Por, said that since Saturday morning many people arrived at Sadarghat by launches.
‘The rush of the returnees will mount from this (Saturday) evening and will continue till Sunday,’ he added.
ABM Kamruzzaman, Dhaka divisional railway manager for Bangladesh Railway echoed Mubarak Hossain.
‘Since morning many people startet returning to Dhaka after the holiday but the rush will increase tomorrow as many have additional holiday of one or two days,’ he said.
The interim government on January 22 also announced that the workers in the industrial areas across the country would get an additional holiday on February 10.
As a result, the industrial workers got a three-day holiday between February 10 and February 12 before their weekend of Friday.
Educational institutions got an additional holiday on February 15, falling on today, due to Sree Sree Shibratri Brata, a Hindu religious occasion, allowing them to go to holiday from February 11 till today.
The madrassahs will get a longer holiday.
According to the Technical and Madrassah Education Division under the education ministry, the three Alia madarassahs and non-government (ibtedayi, dakhil, alim, fazil and kamil) madrassahs will get a 30-day holiday starting from today to end on March 26, marking the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and other holidays.
