At least a dozen people were injured in a clash between activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, allegedly over conducting electoral campaigns, in the capital’s Mirpur area on Tuesday.
Quoting local people, the police said that the incident took place near the Al Mubarak Mosque at Pirerbag in the Mirpur area on Tuesday evening.
Chases and counter-chases between the groups took place as the BNP activists argued why Jamaat activists launched an electoral campaign in the area before the scheduled time, according to the police.
The police said that at least 12 people were injured in the incident.
Campaigning for the upcoming national election is scheduled to begin on January 22.
Jamaat city leaders could not be reached for comments immediately despite several attempts.
Adequate number of police and army personnel was deployed in the area to maintain law and order situation.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s assistant commissioner for Mirpur zone, Mizanur Rahman, said that the police rushed to the spot after knowing the incident.
‘The situation is now under control,’ he said.
