The family of Khandokar Noyeem Ahmed Titon -- a listed "top criminal" according to police -- has filed a case over his killing in Dhaka’s New Market area last night.
Titon’s elder brother, Khandokar Saeed Akhtar Ripon, filed the case against eight to nine unidentified assailants with New Market Police Station this morning, Mohammad Ayub, officer-in-charge of the station, told The Daily Star.
Although no one was named as an accused in the case, several individuals were mentioned in the complaint. They include listed criminal Imamul Hasan Helal alias Picchi Helal, Badal alias Killer Badal alias Kaila Badal, Shahjahan, and Rony alias Dagari Rony.
According to the complaint, Titon, 59, had a dispute with them over the lease of a cattle market in Dhaka's Basila.
Ripon said that Titon was released on bail on August 13, 2024, after spending a long time in jail in criminal cases.
He said Titon later contacted him and expressed regret for causing financial losses and damaging the family’s reputation. Titon also said he wanted to rebuild his life through honest work.
A few days ago, Titon told him that he had purchased a lease schedule and hoped to earn a living through business.
On April 26, Titon told his brother that he was in a dispute with Helal, Badal, Shahjahan and Rony over the lease schedule of the Basila cattle market.
The following day, Titon said he had been called to a meeting to resolve the matter and work together.
Later, around 11:00pm on Tuesday, family members learned that Titon had been shot in front of Shahnewaz Hall in the New Market area and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with gunshot wounds.
Witnesses said two men on a motorcycle carried out the attack around 8:00pm. One assailant fired multiple rounds at Titon, finally shooting him in the head before fleeing through an alley near the BGB gate. Locals chased them, but the attackers fired at the crowd to escape. Both wore hats and masks.
Pedestrians and students rushed Titon to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at 8:30pm.
