Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will rehabilitate hawkers in a planned manner without disrupting pedestrian or vehicular movement, its administrator Md Abdus Salam said today.

The announcement came as DSCC laid the foundation stone for a road development project in the Haq Residential Society area under Zone-2.

State Minister for Road Transport and Highways and Railways Habibur Rashid was present as the special guest.

The project, financed by DSCC, includes the development of about 1.1 kilometres of roads and a piped drainage system at an estimated cost of Tk 3.67 crore.

Speaking at the event, Abdus Salam said the government is focused on delivering results and that the prime minister is closely monitoring city corporation activities. He added that development projects would be implemented in coordination with local members of parliament.

Addressing footpath management, he noted that unregulated street vending had previously caused public suffering.

“From now on, a fixed number of vendors will be allowed to operate at designated spots on footpaths or roads for specific periods. We are ensuring their rehabilitation in an organised manner while keeping pedestrian and vehicular movement smooth,” he said.

Habibur Rashid expressed confidence that DSCC would meet public expectations under the current administration. He also thanked the authorities for prioritising development work in newly added areas.
