A senior official of Uttara Bank PLC died while undergoing treatment in Dhaka today, a day after he was critically injured in an alleged sharp weapon attack in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria.

Md Ariful Islam, 45, principal officer of the bank's Gopinathpur branch, succumbed to his injuries at around 3:30pm at a hospital in the capital.

Ariful was from Pinglu Purbapara village in Joypurhat's Panchbibi upazila. His death was confirmed by Lokman Hossain, second officer of Uttara Bank PLC's Gopinathpur branch.

The attack took place around 6:45pm on Monday in front of Green Health Hospital at Gopinathpur Bazar. According to locals, furniture trader Ali Hossain, 48, repeatedly struck Ariful on the head and neck with a sharp weapon before fleeing.

Local residents and the victim's colleagues rushed him to Kasba Upazila Health Complex. He was later transferred to a hospital in Dhaka.

Quoting local residents, Kasba Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ali Mohammad Rashed said the attack was allegedly triggered by an argument over a loan disbursement involving the Uttara Bank branch.

The accused, Ali Hossain, is a resident of Noamura village under Gopinathpur union in Kasba upazila.

The OC said police are conducting raids to arrest the suspect, and legal proceedings are underway.
