A 35-year-old man was killed after a dispute among football supporters while watching the Argentina-Egypt FIFA World Cup match escalated into violence at a tea stall in Cumilla last night.
The deceased was identified as Md Shariful Islam, 35, from Nilphamari's Jaldhaka upazila. He had been living in a rented house in Cumilla city.
The incident took place around 10:50pm in the Dhanpur area under Durgapur Union of Adarsha Sadar upazila.
Shankar Kumar Das, in-charge of the Nazira Bazar Police Outpost, said an argument broke out after Argentina captain Lionel Messi missed a penalty during the match.
The argument soon turned into a clash, during which two local men, identified as Babu and Main Uddin Malu, allegedly struck Shariful on the head.
Locals rescued him and took him to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the OC said.
Police visited the scene, prepared an inquest report and sent the body to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Touhidul Anwar said police were conducting raids to identify and detain those involved.
As of filing this report at 10:00am, no one had been held and no murder case had been filed in connection with the incident, police said.
