The International Crimes Tribunal-2 today indicted Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and six other leaders of the party and its affiliated bodies in a case filed over crimes against humanity committed during the 2024 July mass uprising.

The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury, framed the charges against the seven.

The others leaders are AFM Bahauddin Nasim, AL joint general secretary; Mohammad Ali Arafat, former state minister for information; Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, chairman of Jubo League; Moinul Hossain Nikhil, its general secretary; and Saddam Hossain and Sheikh Wali Asif Inan, president and general secretary of Chhatra League respectively. All accused are on the run.

According to prosecution, Quader was accused on three counts of issuing directives, instigation and provocation that allegedly led to attacks on and killings of unarmed protesters.

Separate charges were also read out against the other accused.

Prosecution said, the other senior leaders, particularly Bahauddin Nasim and Mohammad Ali Arafat, were also directly involved in facilitating the violence through planning and organisational support.

Quader was named an accused under the doctrine of command responsibility, while the others were charged for their leadership positions and command roles within their respective organisations, according to the prosecution.
