Police have arrested two individuals for allegedly attacking a motorcyclist with a brick and leaving him critically injured in Dhaka's East Shewrapara, following the circulation of CCTV footage of the incident on social media.

The arrests were made during separate drives in Dhaka and Mymensingh yesterday. The arrestees were identified as Parvez, 30, and Anwar Hossain Babu, 32. Police said the attack was pre-planned and stemmed from a previous enmity.

Briefing reporters at the DMP Media Centre today, Deputy Commissioner Mostak Sarker said Parvez was arrested from the Dhobaura border area in Mymensingh, while Babu was apprehended in Dhaka's Ibrahimpur area.

Following the incident, the victim's uncle, Nur Hossain, filed an attempted murder case with Kafrul Police Station.

Explaining the background to the incident, the Deputy Commissioner Mostak said Parvez had previously been a tenant at the victim Rafi's house. A dispute developed between them as Parvez and his associates were allegedly involved in local drug trading activities.

The feud escalated into a heated argument between Rafi, Parvez and Parvez's associate Faisal, alias Kalu, on Tuesday evening, during which the suspects allegedly threatened to teach Rafi a lesson.

According to police, Parvez, Kalu, Babu and another associate, Amin, took positions near the East Shewrapara bus stand at around 1:15am on Wednesday as part of their plan.

When Rafi was passing through the area on his motorcycle, Amin allegedly attempted to block his path and Parvez struck him on the head with a brick. He sustained severe head injuries and collapsed on the road.

CCTV footage showed the attackers later placing the injured Rafi into an auto-rickshaw, while one of them fled with his motorcycle.

Police said the attackers misled locals by claiming that a brick had accidentally fallen on Rafi from a nearby building. They later dumped him in the Ibrahimpur area before fleeing. The abandoned motorcycle was subsequently recovered near the crime scene.

Parvez and the absconding Kalu are accused in multiple drug-related cases filed with different police stations in Dhaka, the DMP official said, adding that drives are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects.
