Bangladeshi garment workers on Friday led a solidarity rally with workers’ organisations of over 30 countries as part of the global ‘Make Amazon Pay’ movement.
On Black Friday, Sommilito Garments Sramik Federation organised a solidarity rally in front of the Dhaka Press Club, with workers from various factories joining, according to a press release.
Nazma Akter, president of SGSF, alleged that although Amazon played a role in nearly every aspect of the global economy, the workers in its supply chain, particularly in Bangladesh’s garment sector, continued to face inadequate wages, restricted union rights and unsafe working conditions.
The press release said that workers, from Amazon’s warehouses to shipping, were often forced to operate in unhealthy environments under strict monitoring and that Amazon had not yet signed the Accord.
During the rally, SGSF called on Amazon to sign the Accord, ensure fair and timely wages across its global supply chain, recognise trade union rights and collective bargaining, guarantee safe workplaces free from sexual harassment, and take responsibility for fair transition and environmental sustainability.
Leaders from various labour federations spoke at the rally.
