Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief, Shafiqur Rahman, today accused the government of betraying the public mandate and warned that "another inevitable revolution" was approaching.

"Had you not betrayed the people, we would have had no reason to be restless. We will not sit idly by while the country falls apart," he said while speaking as the chief guest at an 11-party alliance rally marking the second anniversary of the July Uprising, held at the south gate of Baitul Mukarram in Dhaka.

Shafiqur alleged that the government had betrayed the people within months of assuming office. He also claimed that his party and its allies were facing intimidation and inducements to compromise on their demand to implement the public mandate expressed through the referendum.

"We are being pressured every day to compromise on this issue. We are being tempted with various offers. Before the people of this country, we want to make it clear that we will safeguard your verdict," he said, adding that they were prepared to sacrifice their lives, if necessary, to uphold the demand.

"Everything suggests that another inevitable revolution is approaching. I call upon all of you to prepare for that revolution," he added.

He said that, as in the July movement of 2024, people from all walks of life would remain united in any future movement.

Addressing party leaders and activists, Shafiqur said they should not be intimidated by imprisonment, repression or even the threat of execution.

"If the noose becomes necessary for the liberation of the nation, we will accept it as a garland of flowers," he said.

He said the signs showed that the culture of fear and campus domination was returning and urged students, teachers and staff to remain vigilant.

Shafiqur also alleged that corruption had reached an alarming level and claimed the government was creating artificial gas shortages to justify price hikes, accusing it of deceiving the public.

"Those who have disrespected the people's verdict in the past have all been forced to leave in disgrace," he said.

Speaking as a special guest, Liberal Democratic Party President Col (retd) Oli Ahmad said he had repeatedly urged the prime minister over the past several months not to create divisions.

"The attacks that took place in three different parts of the country yesterday prove that there are people within your own party who do not want to see you remain prime minister," he added.

Presiding over the rally, Mamunul Haque, head of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, one of the alliance partners, said the violent and terror-based politics of the past must be left behind, otherwise people would resist.
