The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has cancelled the appointments of two lawyers from the posts of assistant public prosecutor of the Cumilla District and Sessions Judge Court.
The two lawyers whose appointments were cancelled had recently participated in legal proceedings in the court on behalf of the controversial Chhatra Shibir leader Jisan Mia Pradhan, who was sent to jail in a case filed over raping a widow and forcing her to undergo an abortion.
This information was given in a notification issued by the Solicitors Division (GP-PP Branch) of the Law and Justice Department on Thursday.
According to the notification, the appointments of assistant public prosecutors of the Cumilla District and Sessions Judge Court, Advocate Md Monir Hossain Patwary and Advocate Saidul Islam, have been cancelled.
Their appointments, given through a memorandum issued on October 29, 2024, were cancelled with immediate effect, said the notification signed by senior assistant secretary of the Law and Justice Department Md Faruk Hossain.
Regarding the cancellation of the appointment, Monir assumed that such a decision might have been made as he was performing his duties as a lawyer on behalf of Jisan.
‘However, no official reason has been given in this regard so far,’ he said.
However, the reason for the cancellation of the appointment was not mentioned in the ministry’s notification.
Recently, there was widespread discussion across Cumilla surrounding Jisan, the leader of the Chhatra Shibir, who was found unconscious after going missing and shown arrested in the rape case.
These two lawyers actively participated in his legal process and the cancellation of their appointment has also given rise to new discussions.
