The recurring incidents of mob violence in Bangladesh -- especially against our minority groups -- are a deeply troubling reminder of a persistent and corrosive mentality that insists on retaliation over reason, and instant judgement over justice.

Such outbreaks of collective rage do not just threaten individuals -- they undermine the very idea of law, order, and social harmony.

Bangladesh has long been a society where diversity is woven into its social fabric. Our constitutional commitments to secularism and equal protection under the law are the foundations of a society where every citizen, regardless of belief or background, should feel secure.

When groups punish perceived wrongdoing without due process, the foundations of justice are weakened. Mob violence thrives on fear and rumour, replacing accountability with collective anger.

This is not justice, but disorder in the name of righteousness. It is a practice we must work together to end: Not only for the protection of minorities, but for the safety, respect, and fair participation for all -- especially as the nation approaches its next elections.

We must address the underlying mentality that sees violence as a legitimate response to conflict. This requires sustained efforts in education, community leadership, and civic discourse that emphasize respect for due process, restraint, and rule of law.

Law enforcement must act swiftly and impartially when mobs gather to intimidate or attack, and leaders -- political, religious, or social -- must unequivocally condemn these behaviours.

There is no place in a mature society for violence in the name of justice. Protecting every citizen’s rights, particularly those of minorities, is not an optional commitment -- it is a measure of who we are.

If Bangladesh is to live up to its principles, mob violence must be confronted not just with punitive action, but with a collective reaffirmation of law, dignity, and mutual respect.
