The Detective Branch of police on Sunday arrested Bahubal upazila unit president of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party in Habiganj on charge of threatening the local police officer-in-charge.
Habiganj detective police OC Shamim Iqbal confirmed New Age and said that they arrested Ferdaus Chowdhury Tushar, the upazila BNP unit president.
‘Tushar was picked up from his residence of Shaistanagar area in Habiganj town at noon after the initial verification of the allegation brought against him,’ Shamim said.
According to the Habiganj police, BNP leader Tushar scolded the Bahubal police station officer-in-charge Saiful Islam in obscene language after the OC did not receive his phone call on Saturday afternoon.
The BNP leader allegedly threatened the police officer and said, ‘If you want to work in Bahubal, you will have to do what I say,’ the police said.
Saiful Islam told New Age that after he failed to receive a call of Tushar in the afternoon, the BNP leader called from another mobile phone and behaved very roughly.
Additional superintendent of Habiganj district police, Rakhi Rani Das, told New Age that the accused BNP leader was taken in the police custody.
‘Further legal step against him is underway,’ she said in the evening.
