Persistent rain since morning has waterlogged large parts of Dhaka, disrupting traffic and causing widespread suffering for commuters, especially office-goers and students.

Several major roads and residential streets went under water, slowing traffic and making movement difficult across the capital.

As on many rainy days in Dhaka, commuters are enduring long traffic jams, soaring transport fares, drenched clothing and footwear, and long waits for buses, rickshaws and CNG-run auto-rickshaws. Many office-goers reached their workplaces hours late after struggling to find transport, while some opted to work from home. Many students also skipped classes as waterlogged roads made commuting difficult.

A visit to different areas in the morning found waterlogging in Green Road, Tejturi Bazar, Panthapath, Bashundhara Residential Area, Monipur, Dhanmondi 27 and 32, Mohammadpur, Shewrapara, Kalshi and Uttara, among other neighbourhoods.

The situation was compounded by rainwater left on roads from yesterday's downpour. In several low-lying areas, knee-deep water remained, slowing vehicles and triggering severe traffic congestion.

Pedestrians waded through flooded streets as many alleyways became impassable. Rickshaws, CNG-run auto-rickshaws and private vehicles crawled through submerged roads, while waves created by passing vehicles repeatedly splashed those on foot. Many transport operators also charged higher-than-usual fares, citing the waterlogged roads and heavy traffic.

According to the Gulshan Traffic Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), waterlogging disrupted traffic on both the inbound and outbound lanes of the road adjacent to Dhaka Gate behind Banani Graveyard.

Traffic also slowed at the exit ramp of the Banani-Kakoli Elevated Expressway due to water accumulation.

In the ECB Chattar area, water collected in front of Cantonment Girls' School, slowing traffic from Mirpur DOHS and Kalshi towards the Matikata Flyover via ECB.

Meanwhile, traffic moved slowly on the road in front of Jamuna Future Park due to accumulated rainwater and ongoing Dhaka WASA pipeline installation work.

The Gulshan Traffic Division warned that continued rainfall throughout the day could worsen waterlogging and further disrupt traffic. It advised residents to allow extra travel time and use alternative routes where possible.
