A man was killed and another injured after assailants opened fire in Dhaka’s Jatrabari on Sunday night.

The incident occurred around 11:00pm in Dhalpur Sardar Goli, police said.

The deceased was identified as 40-year-old Imran Hossain, and the injured, 32-year-old Zakaria.

Zakaria's wife Jhinuk Akhter said her husband was involved in a rickshaw garage business. She said the two men were shot when a group of seven-eight men on four motorcycles, wearing helmets, fired indiscriminately at them while they were sitting outside Zakaria’s rickshaw garage.

Both victims were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s emergency unit, where doctors declared Imran dead around midnight. Zakaria is undergoing treatment for bullet wounds to his left leg and right hand.

In-charge of the DMCH police camp, Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, said Imran was shot in the head, adding that his body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Rakib confirmed the incident, saying police were deployed to both the hospital and the crime scene.

Mohsin Masud, additional deputy commissioner of the Wari-Demra zone, told The Daily Star that police primarily suspect the shooting was linked to a drug-related dispute.
