Tawfique Nawaz, a senior lawyer and husband of former Awami League minister Dipu Moni, died at Continental Hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday night. He was 79.

He died at 10:27pm, said Abdullah Al Muhid, a customer care executive at the hospital formerly known as United Hospital.

An Oxbridge-educated senior advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, Nawaz headed the law firm Juris Counsel and was a member of the Board of Trustees of Transparency International Bangladesh.

Nawaz was a member of the Supreme Court Bar Association, the International Law Association, and the Oxbridge Society of Bangladesh. He was also a life member of the Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs (BILIA), serving as its director from 1979 to 1982 and honorary director in 1993. He also chaired the Great Heritage Trust and was a member of the Private Family Trust. Beyond his legal career, Nawaz also practised classical music.

Nawaz suffered a stroke in 2019. On May 27 this year, his relatives took him to court in a wheelchair so he could meet his wife, who was in custody.

Dipu Moni is currently in Munshiganj District Jail as an accused in several cases filed over incidents during the July Uprising.
