Poet and journalist Jahangir Feroze said that our politics should focus on dismantling hegemonies—dominant structures of power and influence—rather than dividing people along lines of belief or non-belief.
He spoke at an event organised by the Jatiya Pressclub Kabitapatra Parishad to mark his 71st birth anniversary.
He also stated that while political poems concern the people, poets should work for unity instead of strengthening the oppressor.
The event, titled Kobi Jahangir Feroze Abirbhab Dibas, comprised discussions and poetry recitations based on Feroze’s literary works at the Maulana Akram Khan Hall of the National Press Club in the capital. Renowned poets, critics, publishers, and editors participated, presenting bouquets of flowers.
Poets including Mohon Raihan, Mahbub Hasan, Jamaluddin, Kamrul Hasan, Kalyan Chakraborty, Shamoli Mandal, and Mahbub Alam spoke and recited poems.
Organisations such as Jatiya Kabita Parishad and Onnodhara Sahitya Sansad greeted the poet with books and flowers. Protidiner Bangladesh editor Maruf Kamal Khan Sohel and publisher Anwar Faridi also shared their memories of the poet.
Born on April 6, 1955, Jahangir Feroze is a prominent Bengali poet, journalist, and writer associated with the literary movement of the 1970s.
