At least seven people were killed and 15 others injured after a speeding bus lost control and ran over roadside workers in Bogura Sadar upazila this morning.

The identities of the deceased could not be immediately confirmed.

The accident happened around 5:30am near Erulia Bazar, close to a school, on the Bogura-Naogaon highway.

Senior Station Officer of Bogura Fire Service and Civil Defence Md Shahidul Islam told The Daily Star that a Dhaka-bound Shah Fateh Ali Paribahan bus was trying to let a motorcycle pass when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The driver hit the brakes and the bus struck an electric pole, spun around, and ran over roadside labourers awaiting hire. Three people died on the spot.

Several units of Fire Service, transport staffers and locals rescued 18 injured and sent them to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. Three more died on the way to the hospital and one during treatment.

The passengers of the bus were largely unharmed, he added.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Krishna Das of the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital police camp spoke with The Daily Star around 10:00am today. He said, "Doctors declared three people dead on arrival at the hospital, and another person died later while undergoing treatment."

Following the incident, locals blocked the highway demanding multiple speed breakers at the spot to prevent further accidents.

Bogura Sadar UNO Abdul Wajed, from the accident site, said, "The executive engineer of the Roads and Highways Department has arrived at the spot and assured that speed breakers will be installed today."
