Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami today expressed deep concern, alleging that President Mohammed Shahabuddin breached his oath by "disclosing" internal and confidential state matters in a recent interview and failed to safeguard entrusted state secrets.
In a statement, Jamaat Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Parwar said the office of the president is the highest constitutional post in the country and that every statement and action by its holder carries national significance and is closely linked to the state oath and the principle of confidentiality.
He alleged that the president, in his recent interview, made public internal and confidential matters of the state, thereby violating his oath and failing to protect sensitive information entrusted to him.
The interview has created various questions, debates and concerns among the public, the statement said.
As president, his remarks have given rise to new "controversy" and "uncertainty" before the nation, Parwar added.
Referring to the constitution, the state oath and constitutional continuity, he alleged the president had plunged the nation into confusion. Making such remarks while holding the office constitutes a violation of his oath and is inconsistent with the dignity and prestige of the state, he alleged.
Parwar further said that maintaining transparency, accountability and constitutional decorum in running the state is the duty of every responsible individual.
In the current political context, responsible office-bearers must make restrained and measured statements, he said.
To preserve public confidence in state institutions, the president should speak with due regard to the constitution and the law and exercise greater caution in protecting the dignity and stability of the state, the statement added.
