A Dhaka court today placed two Bangladeshi men, who were deported from Singapore over suspected links to militant groups, on a two-day remand for interrogation.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order after police sought a five-day remand.
According to the remand petition, Singaporean authorities detained Shahedul Islam, 37, and Rishad Tayani, 25, on suspicion of involvement with militant organisations before deporting them to Bangladesh yesterday.
After they arrived at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, officers of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit took them into custody after being informed by immigration authorities, the petition said.
Police later arrested them under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure based on a general diary (GD) filed with Airport Police Station.
Police also seized three mobile phones and three passports from them, according to the petition.
During preliminary questioning, the two allegedly admitted to having been involved with various banned militant organisations while staying in Singapore, the petition added.
Investigators sought the remand to determine whether the two had any links to banned organisations in Bangladesh, whether they had used electronic devices to carry out prohibited activities, who financed their alleged militant activities, and whether they had connections with any international militant networks.
Contacted by The Daily Star, Kamrul Hasan Talukder, officer-in-charge of Airport Police Station, said the court granted a two-day remand instead of the five days sought by police.
He said the two would be interrogated jointly by Airport Police and the CTTC unit.
