Jamaat-e-Islami has informed the Election Commission (EC) about the expulsion of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party.

In a letter to the chief election commissioner today, Jamaat said the decision was made at an urgent meeting of the party’s central executive council held yesterday with Opposition Leader and the party’s Ameer Shafiqur Rahman in chair.

Gazi Nazrul has been expelled under Article 62 of Jamaat’s constitution after an investigation found evidence of “moral misconduct”, said the letter.

The letter, signed by Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, also asked EC to take necessary action against Gazi Nazrul.

EC officials this afternoon confirmed receiving Jamaat’s letter.

A copy of the letter was also sent to the parliament speaker.

Jamaat expelled Gazi Nazrul after video clips involving the MP and a young woman -- one showing them in an intimate setting -- circulated on social media since Monday night, sparking nationwide reactions.
