A Bangladeshi worker was among 15 people killed in a fire at Russia’s Amur Gas Chemical Complex, the Bangladesh Embassy in Moscow has said.

Another Bangladeshi worker remains missing, while seven others were seriously injured, according to Mizanur Rahman, first secretary at the embassy.

The body of Zakir Hossain, from Bhairab in Kishoreganj, was recovered on Thursday, Mizanur said. The missing worker, Md Alal Hossain Raju, is from Gangni in Meherpur.

Raju has not been found since Tuesday’s fire, the official said. Some bodies were so badly burned that they could not yet be identified, and the embassy believes Raju could be among them.

The fire broke out on Tuesday at the AGCC near the city of Svobodny in Russia’s Amur region.

Reuters reported that AGCC initially said seven people, including six Chinese nationals, had died in a statement on Wednesday.

The company later raised the death toll to 15 in a Thursday update on its Telegram channel, saying 14 of those killed were foreign nationals.

The Moscow Times reported that AGCC is being developed as a joint venture between Russian petrochemical giant Sibur and China’s state-owned oil and gas company Sinopec.

The roughly $10 billion project is planned as one of the world’s largest polymer production facilities. Final-stage testing was under way ahead of its planned opening early next year.

AGCC said the fire started in an auxiliary section of the pyrolysis unit before spreading, but the complex’s main equipment was not damaged.

Mizanur said arrangements were under way to transfer the seven critically injured Bangladeshi workers to a specialised hospital in Moscow for treatment. Six are in intensive care.

The embassy has contacted the company about sending Zakir’s body home, with the company taking steps to repatriate it under the embassy’s supervision.

“And later, the embassy will continue communicating with LLC Sinopec Engineering Group Company regarding his outstanding dues and compensation. The embassy has already prepared the attestation and related documents required to send the body.”
