Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman today warned of a fresh anti-government movement and threatened to bring down the government if it failed to meet the opposition's demands.

"If you deceive the people, you must be prepared to face the consequences. You are walking the path of fascism," he told a divisional rally organised by the 11-party opposition alliance at KB Hemayet Uddin Central Eidgah Ground in Barishal.

Shafiqur accused the government of ignoring the referendum verdict despite campaigning in its favour before the election.

He then urged the administration to act before the alliance's next rally in Sylhet on July 25 or "prepare for a grand rally in Dhaka".

He also demanded a bridge connecting Bhola with the mainland and the extension of the railway network to the country's southern region, saying Barishal had long been neglected.

National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam echoed the warning, saying the opposition was prepared to escalate its programmes.

"We have not yet announced tougher programmes such as hartals or blockades. But we are ready to do so at any time if necessary," he said.
