The censorship certificate for the upcoming Bangladeshi film “Contract Marriage” has been temporarily suspended by the Bangladesh Film Certification Board (BFCB), just days before its scheduled release.

The film, directed by and starring Hassan Jahangir, was set to release across cinemas nationwide on May 15. Popular actress Moushumi plays one of the lead roles in the production, which was originally conceived as a drama before being developed into a telefilm and later a feature film. The project was shot in the United States two years ago.
 

The suspension came following a written complaint filed by actress Zeba Jannat, who also appears in the film. Moushumi herself addressed the matter on social media.

Md Moinuddin, deputy director of the Bangladesh Film Certification Board, confirmed the development to The Daily Star. “The certification for ‘Contract Marriage’ has been temporarily suspended,” he said. “Taking everything into consideration, we have decided to put it on hold for now. We will speak with the producer before taking any further steps.”

Director Hassan Jahangir, however, said he had yet to receive any official communication. “I have not received any letter regarding this. I can only speak once I receive the suspension notice,” he told The Daily Star. “If this has happened, I will file a writ petition in the High Court. I will go as far as necessary. Cancelling a film’s censorship certificate so easily is a great injustice.”

Alongside Moushumi, the film features Zeba Jannat and other actors in key roles. Further developments are expected after discussions between the certification board and the film’s producers.
