The first trailer for "The Odyssey", the latest film by Christopher Nolan, has been released, marking the director's return to cinemas following his Oscar-winning success with "Oppenheimer".

The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the legendary Greek hero, and follows his perilous journey home with his men after the Trojan War. The two-minute trailer offers brief, largely atmospheric glimpses of the story, hinting at themes of survival, loss and endurance rather than revealing major plot details.

According to the trailer, Odysseus and his companions face torture, death and unimaginable sights during their voyage. Yet the road home proves no less brutal than the war they have survived, as they struggle to return to their families and reclaim their former lives.

The cast also includes Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Odysseus's wife, and Tom Holland as his son Telemachus. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson appear in supporting roles, among others.

The trailer has generated strong reactions online, with many viewers expressing excitement about seeing the film on the big screen. One YouTube user joked about arriving at a theatre far too early for the film, while others praised Nolan's influence on contemporary cinema and said they were eager for the release.

"The Odyssey" is Nolan's first project since winning the Academy Award for Best Director for "Oppenheimer", which starred Cillian Murphy as physicist J Robert Oppenheimer.

The story is based on Homer's ancient epic poem, which chronicles Odysseus's long and dangerous journey home after the Trojan War, marked by encounters with monsters, temptation and fate, where intelligence and perseverance prove as important as strength.

Nolan's film is not the first screen adaptation of the epic. The poem was previously adapted in the 1954 film "Ulysses", directed by Mario Camerini and starring Kirk Douglas. The Coen Brothers' 2000 film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" was also loosely inspired by the same source.

"The Odyssey" is scheduled for a theatrical release by Universal Pictures on July 17, 2026. Reports indicate that early ticket sales for select screenings have already sold out.
