Former Gazipur-5 MP Akhtaruzzaman has been sent to jail after being shown arrested in an anti-terrorism case filed with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain ordered his detention on Thursday.

Prosecution Sub-Inspector Arif Reza said investigating officer Inspector Md Masudur Rahman sought seven days to question Akhtaruzzaman in custody. The court, however, set Monday for the hearing.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch arrested Akhtaruzzaman in a Gulshan residence on Wednesday night.

The case alleges that 35-40 Awami League and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists brought out a procession near Mohakhali Bus Terminal on the morning of Jun 18.

They allegedly chanted anti-government slogans and carried out “anti-state activities” by exploding crude bombs, creating panic among the public.

Police later filed the case over the incident.
