Leaders and activists of National Citizen Party (NCP) demonstrated in front of the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka this afternoon, protesting the attack on the party's Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary in Jhenaidah.
Witnesses said the party’s leaders and activists brought out a procession from in front of the Jatiya Press Club around 5:00pm which moved through various roads in the area. Later, they held a brief rally there.
NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, the party's joint convener Ali Hasan Junayed and leaders and activists of Dhaka North and South units were present at the rally.
Photo: Rakib MadberAddressing the rally, Asif Mahmud said the attack carried out on NCP leaders and activists, including Patwary, is deplorable.
“We believe attempts are being made to re-establish the politics of terror and fear in the country. The attackers must be arrested immediately and brought to justice,” he added.
Ali Hasan Junayed said every citizen of Bangladesh has the right to freedom of expression. It is never acceptable that an attack will be carried out just for speaking out against any individual or group.
An egg-throwing incident targeting Nasiruddin Patwary triggered clashes in Jhenaidah town this afternoon after Juma prayers.
The incident happened as the NCP leader was leaving the Old Collectorate Jaame Mosque in the town, said Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Asauzzaman.
Patwary, along with five members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), were reportedly injured in the incident.
