Abhijatri, a Bangladeshi organisation dedicated to promoting adventure, gender equality, and social responsibility, on Monday completed an adventure project titled the Great Delta Swim, said a press release on Tuesday.
The event was a 550 km swimming from the mouth of the River Brahmaputra to the Bay of Bengal by Muhammad Rafikul Islam. He completed it in 25 days.
The journey started on February 21 from Jhunkar Char, located at the entrance of the Brahmaputra in Kurigram and reached Nijhum Dwip in the Bay of Bengal on March 31.
In this journey, he crossed significant confluences, including the Dudh Kumar River, Teesta River, the joining of the Jamuna and Brahmaputra rivers, the confluence of the Padma and the Jamuna, and the merging of the Padma and Meghna rivers.
On average, he swam 22 kilometres per day throughout this monumental swim across the rivers, mentioned in the press release.
Throughout this endeavor, the Abhijatri team was supported continuously by an inflatable kayak and a trawler. Notably, Safkat Faruq played a pivotal role in assisting with kayaking for the majority of the journey, while Nawshad Nawaz contributed to the first segments of the swim.
Muhammad Rafikul Islam, an information technology professional, has previously achieved remarkable feats, having successfully completed swims in the Oceanman Dubai, Oceanman Bali, the Bangla Channel, as well as the icy waters of Antarctica.
Abhijatri also expresses thanks to the River Police, the BIWTA, and the Bangladesh Coast Guard for their support in this journey.
