A pedestrian was killed after a local bus lost control and crashed onto a footpath near Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka this evening.

The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 50, an unmarried man from Dinajpur.

The accident occurred around 6:30pm, said Rakibul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Cantonment Police Station.

"A Paristan Paribahan bus lost control and ran over pedestrian Rafiqul on the footpath near the gate of Kurmitola Hospital around 6:30pm," said Rakibul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Cantonment Police Station.

The victim died on the spot, the police official told The Daily Star.

Meanwhile, police seized the bus and arrested its driver, said Inspector (Operations) Subrata Debnath of Cantonment Police Station.

Rafiqul had been working as a store supervisor at Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden for nearly 20 years, according to his nephew, Imran Hossain Rajib.

Speaking to The Daily Star, Imran said Rafiqul had reported for duty at 9:00am and finished work around 6:00pm. He was waiting for a rickshaw outside Kurmitola General Hospital when a speeding Paristan Paribahan bus lost control, ran over him, and crashed into the Titas Gas substation adjacent to the hospital's boundary wall.

Rafiqul died on the spot, and his body was later taken to the emergency department of Kurmitola General Hospital, Imran said.

Brig Gen Saidur Rahman, director of Kurmitola General Hospital, said the crash damaged the room of Titas Gas substation, causing a minor gas leak. "The gas supply has been cut off."

He said the incident did not disrupt the hospital's regular operations, as the hospital has alternative arrangements.
