Bangladesh’s top rifle shooter, Robiul Islam, got the required government order to take part in the Asian Shooting Championships in New Delhi, India, amid political tensions between the two neighbouring countries after the Bangladesh cricket team declined to travel to India for the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup over security concerns.

Robiul, along with coach Sharmin Akter, is scheduled to fly to India on January 31 before the championships starts on February 2 to 14.

Robiul is set to compete in the men’s 10m air rifle event on February 5 to make his first international appearance since the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

‘I have obtained the service GO earlier from the Bangladesh Navy. As a defence personnel, I do not need to apply for an Indian visa. I can participate with the government order,’ said Robiul.

‘It was a hectic day to receive GO’s from the ministry (Ministry of youth and sports) today (Wednesday). The remaining procedure of getting the visa is going on, and I hope to get the visa in the next two days,’ said Sharmin after getting GOs for her and Robiul.

Bangladesh Navy shooter Robiul has been preparing for the South Asian Games since January 4 under Bangladesh Sports Shooting Federation management and under Sharmin’s tutelage.

Unlike previous editions, however, the Bangladesh Shooting Sport Federation is sending only a two-member contingent, whereas earlier teams included multiple air rifle and pistol shooters in both men’s and women’s events.
