An egg-throwing incident targeting National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary triggered clashes in Jhenaidah town this afternoon after Jumma prayers.

The incident happened as the NCP leader was leaving the Old Collectorate Jaame Mosque in the town, said Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Asauzzaman, adding that additional police have been deployed in the area immediately after authorities learned of the incident.

He said the situation was now under control.

Patwary, along with five members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), were reportedly injured in the incident.

According to the OC, NCP members were preparing to file a complaint with the police station and legal action would be taken in accordance with the law.

According to eyewitnesses, Islamic University Chhatra Dal Convener Sahed Ahmed was talking to Patwary while leaving the mosque after prayers. At one stage, a Chhatra Dal activist accompanying Sahed reportedly threw eggs at Patwary and attempted to attack him.

Leaders and activists of the NCP and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement then reportedly surrounded him, placed a helmet on his head and protected Patwary from the attack.

The situation later escalated into clashes involving brickbats, sticks between the two sides.

Jhenaidah district NCP Joint Coordinator Hamid Parvez said Nasiruddin Patwary had arrived in the town as part of a scheduled programme.

He alleged that Chhatra Dal activists carried out the planned attack and that preparations were underway to file a legal complaint.
