A delegation from rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) today visited the home of the 11-year-old girl in Netrokona’s Madan upazila after she became pregnant following the alleged rape by a madrasa teacher.
The ASK team visited the child’s home to assess her physical and mental condition, review the family’s security situation, and examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident, according to the organisation.
After visiting the victim’s home and the site of the alleged rape, ASK Senior Staff Lawyer Selina Akter and investigator Tawhid Ahmed Rana met Mohammad Tarikul Islam, officer-in-charge of Madan Police Station, to discuss the progress of the investigation.
ASK Senior Coordinator Abu Ahmed Faizul Kabir told The Daily Star, “This is not just an isolated crime, but a glaring example of the extreme failure of child safety and the state’s protection system.”
The organisation demanded specialised medical treatment, psychological support for the child, and security for her family.
“The girl is a minor. Considering her physical and mental condition, we have come to stand by her. At the same time, we are monitoring the case and the investigation process,” he added.
Faizul also expressed concern over the growing number of rape cases nationwide, saying the Netrokona case was particularly disturbing because of the victim’s age.
“A child went to study at an educational institution and now has another life growing inside her body. This is completely unacceptable,” he said.
“It must be ensured that no influential quarters can interfere with the investigation. The victim’s family is financially vulnerable, which often leads to various pressures,” he said.
On the child’s current condition, Faizul said she was suffering from anaemia and severe mental distress.
“She cannot sleep at night. The child is mentally broken. We could not even speak to her normally,” he said.
According to police, the victim’s mother filed a case on April 23, alleging that her daughter, a madrasa student, was raped by Amanullah Mahmudi Sagar, a teacher at the same institution, resulting in a seven-month pregnancy.
Police have arrested the accused and produced him before court, which sent him to jail. On May 10, following a three-day remand, the court ordered a DNA test.
