Bangladesh said on Monday that the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was a violation of international law and norms.

The government issued the statement a day after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader since 1989 and sworn enemy of the West, was killed in the opening salvo of a massive US and Israeli attack, sparking a new wave of retaliatory missile strikes from Tehran on Sunday.

‘The Government is saddened to learn that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was assassinated in a targeted attack, which is a violation of international law and norms. It extends heartfelt condolences to the brotherly people of Iran,’ reads the statement.

‘Bangladesh believes that conflict brings no solution and only dialogue, mutual respect and adherence to the international law can resolve disputes,’ the statement added.

Earlier, Bangladesh on Sunday condemned the violation of sovereignty in several Gulf Arab states, including Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which hosts US bases targeted by Iran in retaliatory attacks.
