Police arrested a 30-year-old man on charges of murdering his three-month-old stepson in Dhaka’s Mirpur early today.

The incident took place in the Bardhanbari area of Darus Salam, said Kazi Abdul Khalek, inspector (investigation) of Darus Salam Police Station. The arrestee, Al-Amin, is a resident of the area, he added.

Razia Khatun, mother of the deceased infant Aryan, told The Daily Star that her former husband had abandoned her during pregnancy to marry another woman. She later married Al-Amin.

“Al-Amin is a drug addict and used to beat Aryan whenever the child cried. Earlier today, Al-Amin broke Aryan’s right leg because he was crying. At one point, he threw Aryan to the ground, leaving him dead on the spot,” Razia said.

Soon after the incident, locals caught Al-Amin and handed him over to police.

Inspector Khalek said the child was buried after an autopsy at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue.

Meanwhile, Al-Amin was sent to jail by a Dhaka court after a case was filed against him, the police official added.
