Actress Azmeri Haque Badhon has revealed plans to pursue legal action following an attack in Italy where she was harassed and physically assaulted.

She said she will not be “intimidated into silence”.

"I will not return to Bangladesh until the legal process is complete. I am not leaving Venice without filing a case. I will see this through to the very end," she said.

The incident took place on Monday night Bangladesh time in Mestre, where Badhon was attending the Venice International Film Festival.

Addressing the matter during a Facebook Live broadcast on Tuesday afternoon, the actress confirmed that she and her family members were safe.

"Those who carried out this despicable act against me identified themselves as Awami League and Chhatra League activists," Badhon said. "Since the incident, many people have been calling to check on me. I want to reassure everyone that I am fine."

Referencing her contacts with the government and the Bangladeshi Embassy in Italy, she added: "We have all the evidence and have already identified several individuals.

"I am heading to the police station alongside embassy officials to file a case. The Prime Minister's Office in Bangladesh has also contacted me."

She continued, "I am deeply distressed by how my younger brother, his wife, and their 3-year-old child were subjected to harassment and physical assault. It is utterly vile.

"The local police in Italy have been very helpful and have moved me to a safe location," she added.

Reflecting on her involvement in the 2014 July Uprising, she said: "I stood by the people of Bangladesh during the July mass uprising. I consider it one of the best decisions of my life. I am a proud July warrior. I am grateful to everyone in the country who has stood by me in times of danger."

Meanwhile, Prime Minister's Information Advisor Zahed Ur Rahman warned that those responsible for harassing and assaulting the actress would not go unpunished, adding that legal procedures had already commenced in Italy.

"Badhon came under attack, and we have seen the footage -- it was filmed and published by the attackers themselves, not her," he said.

"In a way, I feel like thanking those who did this. They have exposed once again what the Awami League really is and what its members are capable of."

The advisor added, "I can assure you that the process of taking whatever legal measures are required in that country has already begun."
