The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested a 23-year-old man in the capital for allegedly creating fake Facebook accounts using the names and photos of senior police officers and important state officials.

The arrestee, Md Ripon, was apprehended from Bangladesh Medical University in Shahbagh around 4:30pm, according to a DMP press release.

DB officials recovered two mobile phones from his possession.

According to the press release, an organised gang had long been using such fake accounts to share misleading posts featuring photos of high-ranking officials, including the inspector general of police, in an attempt to deceive ordinary citizens.

During primary interrogation, Ripon confessed to running the fraudulent activities with the help of his cohorts for a long time. The process of taking legal action against him is currently underway, the press release added.
