Miscreants attacked Masum Mostafa, Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker from Netrokona-5, and vandalised his vehicle in Purbadhala upazila of Netrokona on Friday evening.

The incident occurred around 6:45pm at Giripath Filling Station in Atkapara, according to police and local sources.

Speaking to this correspondent, the MP said that after attending the inauguration of a madrasa, he went to the filling station and entered a prayer room to offer Maghrib prayers. While praying, he heard shouting and the sound of his vehicle being vandalised outside.

He alleged that over 100 people, led by Purbadhala upazila BNP Joint Convener Ishtiaq Ahmed Babu, attempted to attack him.

He also said that the upazila unit Jamaat nayeb-e-ameer was assaulted during the incident.

The MP also said worshippers present in the prayer room locked the doors and helped protect him.

“After calling 999, police and army personnel arrived and rescued us,” he said, adding, “Even as an MP, I do not feel secure – one can imagine the condition of ordinary citizens.”

Police and locals confirmed that law enforcement and army personnel reached the scene, brought the situation under control, and rescued the MP.

He was later taken safely to the upazila Jamaat office in the vehicle of Upazila Nirbahi Officer Taslin Jahan.

However, Purbadhala upazila BNP Senior Joint Convener Babul Alam Talukdar denied the allegations against BNP members.

“After Maghrib prayers, a Jamaat leader called me, and I went to the spot immediately on a motorcycle. I helped them leave,” he said.

Babul said he heard the incident stemmed from a dispute between locals and the MP’s associates over a demand for extra fuel.

He added, “I have spoken to the MP and expressed regret. If any BNP members are found involved, we will take action against them.”

BNP leader Ishtiaq Ahmed Babu could not be reached for comments in this regard.

Didarul Islam, officer-in-charge of Purbadhala Police Station, said some miscreants attacked and vandalised the MP’s vehicle. The MP had come to file a complaint.

“Legal action will be taken once the complaint is received,” he added.
